Hello

I wrote some time ago about my gr gr grandfather Lacy Goodlad.
I am still unsure of his death certificate.

Throughout his life on certificates and census returns he has always been known as Lacy but the only death cert I can find is.

Harry Lacey Goodlad June/July/ August 1883. Cert Vol 9c 275 Sheffield.

So if it is "my" lacy why has he suddenly called Harry Lacy? I have found his grave where he is buried with his father William and is called Lacy.

Unfortunately this man (Harry Lacy) died in a cart accident so the coroner is the informer so I cannot see any connection with my Lacy family.

Would there still be coroner reports archived? would the local newspapers mentioned it or was industrial accidents part of the course? Would they mention family? so I can try and make a connection.

Can I access these records on line? as I live 100+ miles away from sheffield.

I would be gratful for any help

regards
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
It looks like it could be a strong possibility as:
Harry Lacey GOODLAD aged 38, died June 1883, Sheffield, Vol.9c, Page 276

Birth of Lacy GOODLAD, Sheffield, June 1845, Vol. 22, Page 590

I found a marriage for Lacy GOODLAD Dec. Qtr.1866, Sheffield Vol.9c. Page 517 to either Hannah Richardson or Emma Coggin.

Another marriage for a Lacy GOODLAD, June 1880, Sheffield 9c. Page 562 to either Bella Haseley or Elizabeth Revill

Does any of this help?

Regards,
Marlene

Looking on the 1881 census I see that Lacy GOODLAD obviously married Elizabeth REVILL June 1880.
They have a child Lillian Elizabeth GOODLAD aged 3 months on this census, do you have her birth certificate as that should give the name of her father to see whether a "Harry" has been added somewhere.
Also, I believe you should be able to access (if there are any) Coroners' reports at Sheffield Archiives, have you tried e-mailing them to ask if such things do exist?
Just a thought!

Thank you for your help. I did contact the sheffield achives who told me unfortunatly the coroner's reports pre 1926 have been lost but to contact the local studies who may have newspaper reports.

They were great! A very speedy service and a great help for someone who live many miles from Sheffield.

They have send me copies of news paper reports saying poor Harry Lacy's horse bolted knocking him under the wheel of his cart and he died shortly after in Sheffield Infirmary.

Thanks again for your advice

You're very welcome. I'm pleased that you now have some background to this tragic event, very sad but, that's what family history is all about, it's life!
