Hi  Everbody,
I  am  searching  for  any  information  on  GEORGE  HURST  or  HIRST  Born  in  Sheffield  about  1792.  He is  in  Chapeltown  in  1827 when  his  son  William  was  born, and  he  is  shown  as  a  Moulder.
I  know  that  the  family  moved  to  Staveley  Deryshire  some  time  later.
I  beleive  that  he  was  married  to  Hannah  ???  in  Sheffield  but  I  have  no  further  knowledge  of  him  apart from  his  Death  Cert.  in  1877.  Can  anybody  help  at  all?
                   Thank  you.

I have found the following on our baptisms CD.

20th November 1791
George son of John & Ann HIRST...labourer

23th Dec 1792.
George son of Geo & Mary HURST.....coaker

When your research progresses beyond 1837...I find it beneficial to go through the parish registers for the area they were born in and note all the children born with the surname HURST (in your case) you can then group them into families.
It is slow but thorough.

Hi  Angela,
Sorry  to  trouble  you  again  but  can  you  suggest  where  I  might  locate  the  marriage  of   George  Hirst/ Hurst  with his  wife  a   Hannah ?????? who  I  know  were  at  Chapeltown  when  the  Bapt.  of  their  son  William  took  place  according  to  the  Parish  record.  Georges  birthplace  is  simply  listed  as   Sheffield.
                          Thank  you.

Where did you find the baptism, was it at St Marys Ecclesfield.

The only marriage I can find within the time frame of the baptism is this one at SS Peter & Paul (later cathedral) (Taken from the Marriage index CD)I have checked from 1826 back to 1818.

Between Dec 1821 - May 1823

George HURST and Hannah SEDGWICK

This marriage is also listed on the IGI as taking place 28th June 1822.

Hi  Angela,
I  thank  you  for  your  help
The  Bapt  of  George  and  Hannah's  Hirst/Hurst   son  William  was  in  the  parish  of  Ecclesfield  in  the  county  of  York  on  the  29th April 1827. No.766
(Sheffield  City  Archives  Ref  PR 54/7)  it  does  not  say  what

In  the  1841  census  at  Staveley, George  is  shown as  being  45  Years   old
   .           1851                                                                     59  ..........
               1861                                                                    69 ..............
               1871                                                                    77    ..
51, 61, and  71   state  that  he  was  born  in  Sheffield.

George  died    in  August  1877,  D.C. states  he  was  then  85    ........

So  this  seems  to  sugest  that  he  was  born  in  1792 or 92 or 94.

Just  assuming   that he  married  when  he  was 20  years  old  he  woud  have  been  wed  in  1812  onwards.
I  wonder  if  you  have  any  suggestions  that  would  meet  these  dates.
I  do  thank  you  very  much  for  your  help  and  would  be  happy  to make  a  donation  to  the  Sheffield and  District  F.H.S

The age on the 1841 census would be correct.....as the enumerators instructions were to round down to the nearest 5 or 0 all adult ages over 15.

I was assuming that William was the first born...but looking at the 1841 census they have a 20 year old George in the household who could be aged 20 to 24.

This marriage, again at St Peter & St Paul would make more sense.

31st Dec 1815 George HURST and Hannah BEAUMONT.

PR54 is Ecclesfield St Mary...this is the reference the archives have given the Ecclesfield parish records.

Hi.

Not having followed this family, I can't ascertain if you have the correct George HI/URST.

I did check the baptism of William on Wednesday and the address given is White Lane and the baptism was at Ecclesfield St Marys.

I also found a marriage for George HURST and Hannah BEAUMONT at Sheffield parish church.

George was a widower when they married.
If your email is correct then I will send a copy later.
