bit of a shock but alot better. alot easier to use so you don't have to look through everything ie surnames are alot easier to find.
keep up the good work

Hello Ann,

This site works like a message board. Any message you post ('pin up') on the notice board can be read by anyone who visits the site. The site is set up so that visitors can post messages even if they are not registered or logged in. I would recommend logging in because it will make it easier for you or someone else to find the archived messages.

An added feature with this new format is that if you are logged in you can send private messages. If you find a message that interests you and you would prefer to respond in private, click on the user name to the left of the message and you will find both the user's profile and an option to send a message.

My preference, however, is almost always to post messages publicly. This is for several reasons:

(1) if I do a look-up then others will see that it has been done and won't duplicate the effort.

(2) a third party with important information to add may see the thread and join in.

(3) new members, who may be new to genealogy, can learn what resources are available and what techniques can be used.

(4) public messages will be available in the future to internet search engines - a very important consideration as we build the links with relations or others with similar interests.

You were able to post the above message (though I don't know why your post count is still at zero ?!). Just choose the appropriate board, and go through the same process again!

Welcome to the site!

Hugh

Hi , Now I am beginning to get used to it I am really pleased with the new site .  The listings are split into useful sections which seem to satisfy needs.
My only hitch to date is that I received an emial today saying someone had replied to a posting of mine but for the life me I can't find it  - perhaps a senior moment !!

Dear all

Having problems downloading my avatar. On other forums there has always been a browse button.  Dont know what a URL is.  The rest of the forum is great just like all the others ones I go on, easy to use.

Its absolutelywonderful! I am an oldie and new to the site (new to any site). THis is so much easier than getting on a bus and going down to the library. I have received such useful answers to all the questions I've asked. . . 'Lower Hamlet' is not in Sheffield at all, but actually 'Tower Hamlets' in London - who would have thought it?   . . . A national data base of mining deaths and injuries - who would have thought it? And all those people reading my questions and wanting to help!  Isnt the internet fun! I can hardly bear to switch off at bedtime.

I must admit I liked the old message board, but at 81yrs I am finding it hard to adapt, I will get there in time. It is still the best FH Site on the web

Mostly I enjoy the new Message Board and have just about worked out how to use it. I shall tell my sister, also a native of Sheffield but now livig in Australia, that this is a good place to look for our Sheffield forebears.
I have been a member of Sheffield FHS for many years as a native of the city.  Today I have written a response to Ray Alderton in reply to his question on Military and Marriages.  Somehow I am listed as 'guest'.  Did I press the wrong button?
My late husband was the son of an army officer (RAMC doctor) so I have some understanding of tracking down soldiers.  I eventually discovered that father-in-law married his wife in Bombay Register Office.  The India Office found this for me.
I only wish Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire had similar Message Boards

I think the message board is brilliant and people are clearly very helpful. I am very diconcerted to see postings about sex videos etc. is ther no way of excluding these. it seems a shame to exclude non members but some of the stuff is very offensive.

Hi Lizzie.

In our attempt to keep the message board open to all there is no way of stopping the spam. There are 4 people monitoring the board...myself,Hugh and Barry during the day and Doug during the night as he sleeps at different times to us...LOL

My advise would be to just ignore them as sometime during the 24 hours they will be deleted.

Thankyou for your comments and feel free to ask any questions.

Kind Regards
Angela
